Precise line-of-sight modelling for angles-only relative navigation

This work presents a precise analytical model to reconstruct the line-of-sight vector target satellite over time, as required by angles-only relative navigation systems for application rendezvous missions. The includes effects of geopotential, featuring: propagation in mean orbital elements (up second-order expansion), two-way osculating/mean elements’ conversion (second-order J2 and up given degree order geopotential), mapping from perturbed osculating set local frame. Performances are assessed against reconstructed out GPS-based positioning products PRISMA mission. modelled far-range one day long scenario can be fitted true presenting residuals ten arc-seconds, which is below typical sensor noise at far-range.
